Nick Chapman is an Alexander Technique teacher in private practice.
When I first started the Alexander Technique I was clumsy, hunched over, tense, anxious and suffered debillitating lower back pain. I was stressed and worried about worrying. After finding several ‘therapists’ who were more concerned with writing books and being famous I set off to study and practice the Alexander Technique. 32 years later I am happi;y married with two children and an amazing job- inspiring others to feel better using this increasingly popular technique. Personal Experience.
My first lesson was with Angie Herzberg in 1991. I was a young aspiring actor. My elder brother, the very successful Sean Chapman, was giving me actincg classes. He suggested that I try to sort out my acting ‘body’, my physicality as an actor using the Alexander Technique.
When I was just 24 years old I was a hyper type , very nervous and awkward physically. I also had this terrible lower back pain. Not really knowing anything about the technique I only attended because I wanted to be like my brother Sean. I wanted to be a successful actor.
At the time Angie occasionally taught at Walter Carringtons’ training school in Holland Park. So I trundled along, following orders from my unique acting coach and rang the bell. It was an old victorian house, converted into the most famous teaching locations for Alexander Technique in the world.
Little did I know at the time that I would become an Alexander Technique teacher. My ambition to act at the time was very strong. After six of these visits I was a total convert and my dedication to the technique has never faltered. I became more confident and relaxed and of course the lower back pain was gone.
